MY STYLE
My very favorite thing about being a photographer is telling a story. Your story. Yes, we will do some posed shots of everyone (hopefully!) looking at the camera; everyone wants them. But my focus is not on getting the "perfect" posed picture with everyone smiling. My focus is on taking pictures of the honest moments, the real YOU. What your family is like TODAY. So during our time together, I will encourage you to talk to each other, play, snuggle, kiss, and just be yourself. And I will stand back with my camera and do my best to capture it all.
WHAT TO WEAR:
When it comes to choosing what to wear for your photo shoot, I think that the most important thing is that you be yourself! Pick comfortable clothes that are truly a reflection of you + your family. Worry less about trends and matching every last detail, and more about what captures the real you.
A few tips:
COLOR COORDINATE:
- wear a variety of colors that are complimentary to each other.
- choose colors that look well on everyone's skin tones.
- avoid clothing with large and distracting logos
- color coordinating does not mean everyone wearing the same exact color or completely matching outfits
- choose bright colors
- patterns are great, but try to keep them on only one or two people with everyone else in solid colors or it will be too overwhelming
HAVE FUN:
- do not be afraid to accessorize with colorful shoes or boots, hats, tights, tutus, scarves, etc.
- feel free to bring props that are representative of you + your family and meaningful to you and this season in your life (i.e. blankies, games, toys, books, etc.)
- if your kids have a strong opinion about what they want to wear, go for it! Even if their favorite shirt or rainboots do not perfectly match, they will capture the real YOU and the memory of today
WHERE TO GO:
All photo sessions take place in your home or at a location of your choice; always using natural light.
Photo sessions in your home will have more of a lifestyle feel, with the emphasis being on capturing your family life. Favorite corners of your house, baking cookies or playing a game together, putting the baby down for a nap, all of the little things that make up your home and life as a family.
Photo sessions on-location should be at place that you love or that is meaningful for your family, such as a favorite park, an urban setting downtown, a wheat field in the country, or beloved farm. I encourage you to bring a favorite blanket or chairs to sit on and to be prepared to play and run around!
If you need ideas for outdoor locations, please feel free to email me for suggestions.
If you choose to have an outdoor location, my preference is to shoot in the early morning or late afternoon; I have found that those times are the best for shooting with natural light.
